Exam Application Requirements
An applicant can check whether she or she is eligible for the ABMP exam(s) by reviewing the ABMP Information Booklet, which also contains the Professional Experience Requirements .
Certified Health Physicist (CHP) Pathway
In December 2016, the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Physics voted to extend their reciprocity agreement with the American Board of Health Physics, to allow Certified Health Physicists (CHPs) wishing to enter the ABMP certification process to proceed directly to the ABMP Part III (Oral Exam) for Medical Health Physics (MHP), given that they meet additional requirements applicable to all MHP candidates. In order to apply directly to the ABMP Part III (Oral Exam) in Medical Health Physics, the additional requirements for Health Physicists already certified by the American Board of Health Physics are:
- Proof of certification by the American Board of Health Physics must be submitted as part of the application.
- The CHP must possess a graduate degree in physics, medical physics, or other appropriate and related field, from an accredited university. An official transcript must be submitted as part of the application.
- The CHP must have an acceptable amount of medical health physics experience, which is determined by the degree obtained. This information is documented in the ABMP Information Booklet
- The CHP must submit endorsements by both a board-certified medical physicist and a board-certified physician.
- All candidates in the ABMP certification process have 10 years to complete the exam process. Any candidate that does not complete any part of the exam sequence in 3 attempts must start the sequence again. Any CHP that does not pass the Part III (Oral Exam) in 3 attempts will be required to take and pass Part II of the MHP exam before being allowed to apply for the Part III (Oral Exam) again.
Candidates meeting the above criteria are invited to apply for this year’s ABMP Medical Health Physics Part III (Oral Exam). The MHP Oral Exam is a 2-hour examination conducted by three ABMP-certified Medical Health Physicists.
Policy on Professional Ethics
The American Board of Medical Physics, Inc., reserves the right to revoke any certificate and diplomate status which it has awarded if the recipient engages in actions which are in violation of its Policy on Professional Ethics, encoded in its ABMP Form on Professional Ethics which all new diplomates are required to sign.
In addition, it is recommended that the diplomate review the document, “Guidelines For Ethical Practice For Medical Physicists“, published by American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
